Ross Constable
Ross Constable is a British contemporary artist whose evocative work explores the interplay between personal trauma, nature, and healing. His artistic journey is deeply intertwined with a life-altering event that reshaped both his health and creative vision.
Originally from a quiet village in Staffordshire, Constable pursued Textile Design at Manchester Metropolitan University. He embraced urban life, spending nearly three decades in the suburbs of Manchester before relocating to Cheshire marking a new chapter in his life and artistic career.
In December 2018, during a holiday in Thailand, Constable contracted both severe dengue fever and Japanese encephalitis—a rare and devastating combination. The illnesses resulted in a lifelong brain injury and the sudden onset of Tourette’s syndrome. The ensuing physical and emotional challenges, including depression and identity loss, became central themes in his art .
Constable’s work is a vivid reflection of his recovery journey. His self-portraits delve into the darkness of his experiences, capturing the fatigue, pain, and fragility he endured. Nature plays a pivotal role in his art, symbolizing solace and renewal. A transformative moment occurred during a walk in The Carrs Park, where the simple act of observing a bug on a leaf brought him clarity and peace. This experience underscored the therapeutic power of nature, a theme that permeates his work .
His collections often feature birds, whose movements he likens to his own tics, finding beauty in their natural rhythms. The “Spring Daffodil” series, inspired by a heartfelt letter from a friend’s mother, celebrates hope and new beginnings. Additionally, his “Brain Inspired” series draws parallels between neural patterns and natural forms, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the human mind and the environment .
In May 2025, we were honoured to host Constable’s debut solo exhibition, showcasing his journey through illness and recovery. The exhibition highlighted the stages of his healing process, with nature serving as a constant source of inspiration and comfort .
Ross Constable’s art stands as a testament to resilience and the healing power of creativity. Through his work, he invites viewers to explore the depths of human experience and the restorative potential of the natural world.
