Man by Sunlit Sea by Theodore Major

One of Theodore Major’s most impactful seascape paintings ever painted.  Although his home in Appley Bridge was not particularly near to the sea, his brief visits to the seaside impacted the artist and led to a series of impactful and thought provoking paintings.

As his daughter Mary recalled, ‘Twice in my life I went for a short holiday with my parents. Normally Theo would never desert his paintings, and as Kathleen would never leave him, always dreading an unforeseen illness and collapse in her absence, we simply didn’t go anywhere’.  ‘Both ‘adventures’ were to Llandudno where Theo had been asked as a guest of an art society. From these experiences Theo painted from memory and perfectly encapsulated the loneliness of humankind and the vastness of eternity.
