The Viaduct by L S Lowry

L S Lowry’s original lithographs are amongst his most collectible editions, not only are they from smaller edition runs of just 75 examples, but each is deemed as an original lithograph due to the artisan and individual nature of the lithographic process.

This particular example is perhaps the rarest of the lithographs and almost never comes to market. Depicting the classic viaduct which has become synonymous with Lowry in Stockport, the image includes many of Lowry’s most iconic motifs.  A truly rare and collectible original lithograph.

This Ganymed lithograph The Viaduct, Stockport, was published around 1969 from an edition of 75.   Although unequivocally based on the Stockport Viaduct, the great 27-arch brick railway viaduct carrying the West Coast Main Line over the River Mersey valley, there are distinctions between the image and actual scene.  Lowry himself explained that he did not paint topographically accurate views. He said:  “It fascinates me, dominates my imagination. As you know, my pictures are often based on separate fragments of reality which I fit together to create townscapes.”
