Description

Winchcombe Landscape by L S Lowry Original Drawing

We are thrilled to be able to offer this rare and beautiful original pencil drawing by the late L S Lowry detailing a landscape and farm buildings believed to depict Winchcombe in the Cotswolds.

Almost 100 years old, this drawing dates from 1930, a period when Lowry had a connection with the beautiful Cotswold.  Lowry’s friend and confidant, H W Timperley, commissioned Lowry to produce twelve drawings to illustrate his book entitled ‘A Cotswold Book’, which was published in 1931.  Lowry took on the commission having been encouraged by Timperley’s wife Edith during a period of depression and would be the only book that he agreed to illustrate in his lifetime.  Lowry went on to remain close to the Timperley’s who were particularly good to him after the death of his mother in 1939, reportedly looking after him for several weeks afterwards.

This drawing was sold from the collection of a large country house in the North West in 2017 and has been subsequently beautifully restored, conserved and framed in a gold leaf frame with linen mount and museum glass to protect it for future generations.

Contact the gallery now to view this wonderful piece of northern art history or for further details.
