Original Artwork by Damien Hirst
An original skull spin painting by the iconic Damien Hirst.
Damien Hirst created his series of skull spin paintings in the early 2000s as part of his ongoing exploration of life, death, and the passage of time. These works combined two of his recurring motifs—the human skull, symbolizing mortality, and the spin painting technique, representing energy, chance, and spontaneity. Using a mechanical spinning device to apply brightly colored paint to canvases featuring the skull motif, Hirst embraced both control and randomness in the creative process. The skull spin paintings reflect his fascination with the contrast between the vibrancy of life and the inevitability of death, while also offering a more playful and dynamic take on the traditional memento mori theme.
This more recent painting was produced in 2024 and gifted to ‘Emily’ to whom it was dedicated on the front of the painting and also noted on the official Science label to the reverse, a key part of it’s provenance and history. This amazing contemporary piece has been expertly framed in black with museum glass and a vibrant spacer in the frame.
