Joan Puerto Cornella

Born in 1968 in Santander, Spain, Joan Puerto Cornella grew up near the coast, spending much of his childhood by the sea, painting watercolours on the beach as he watched waves and sunsets unfold.

His early experiences fostered a lifelong passion for painting and shaped the thematic focus of his work.  He pursued formal art studies in Madrid, where he would study the Old Masters by observing their technique and composition firsthand in the city’s museums.  Later, he travelled to Paris to deepen his skills and broaden his artistic style - especially influenced by the city’s rich collections, notably of Impressionist art.

Cornella specialises in seascapes, often portraying sunsets, waves, and tranquil marine vistas.  His work has been praised for its delicate light, nuanced colour and powerful emotional resonance - likening his seascapes to "self portraits" or "landscapes of the soul" that are both "powerful and tender".  His approach often involves transforming the menacing sea into something harmonious and alive, suggestive of reconciliation between emotional depth and natural beauty.
