James Blinkhorn
James Blinkhorn (b. 1966, Manchester) is a British contemporary artist known for his atmospheric urban landscapes and distinctive mastery of tone. Trained at Tameside College of Art and Design, he began his career exploring gritty, rain-soaked industrial scenes before expanding into broader cityscapes influenced by travels through Europe and New York. His signature technique includes the use of more than 50 hand-crafted grey pastels, allowing him to capture subtle shifts in light, concrete, weather, and urban atmosphere. Though best known for moody metropolitan works, Blinkhorn also produces vibrant automotive pieces and a wide range of landscapes, figurative studies, and nostalgic northern-industrial scenes, demonstrating a versatility that defies strict categorization.
Over the years, Blinkhorn has exhibited across the UK, Europe, and the United States, with his artworks appearing in both private collections and corporate boardrooms. He has held successful solo shows since early in his career and continues to expand his impact on the contemporary art world as founder and director of Vermilion Gallery in Cheshire. Guided by a belief that creativity thrives on diversity rather than a single style, Blinkhorn’s work blends atmosphere, memory, and urban energy, establishing him as a distinctive voice in modern British art.
