Craig Davison
Craig Davison, born in Sheffield 1965, is a contemporary artist who’s style has been heavily influenced by his early adventures and escapades in the endless summer holidays of the 70’s around the famous steel city of Sheffield.
Davison drew from a very young age, and excelled at art in school but decided to not take it further. He is a self-taught artist who began his career as a cartoonist; he drew for a variety of pre-school comics such as The Wombles, Bangers & Mash, Huxley Pig and The Shoe People before moving into animation and games design with a major British company. This allowed Craig to sculpt figures for his 3D animation and develop artistically into a freelance sculptor working alongside international brands including Harry Potter and Doctor Who.
After more years passed, sculpting work became harder to come by and in a rush painted a piece for a contest in which the famous artist Alexander Millar would select his apprentice. He finished in the top three and gained much encouragement from his close victory and started painting with a much greater passion and has been painting professionally for galleries since 2007.
Davison paints from the perspective of a child’s mind, and in the artworks the children take on the forms of famous superheroes, fictional characters and stereotypes. The ‘Shadow’ series reflects this as it’s a series of paintings that take on multiple genres including Star Wars, Marvel, DC Superheroes, Hollywood and Television and fully shows the innocence of fantasy and childlike play. Craig says: “Ideas come from everything and anything. Everywhere I look, images and ideas are lining up to be used.”
