Ben Kelly
Ben Kelly was a contemporary British artist based in Cheshire, celebrated for his richly detailed, narrative-driven oil paintings that captured everyday life with wit, atmosphere, and technical precision.
Born in Manchester in 1974, he trained at Central Saint Martins before developing a distinctive practice rooted in observation of the Northern landscape and urban experience. His work often depicted familiar scenes—crowds, sporting events, local gatherings—infused with a subtle surreal quality and a strong sense of storytelling.
Kelly became widely respected for his mastery of light and layered paint, creating compositions where figures, animals, and environments feel both grounded and dreamlike. His paintings frequently explored communal experiences, particularly football culture and public life, reflecting his deep connection to the region. In 2006, he won the prestigious Football in the Arts Prizel which led to a residency with Manchester City and a significant body of work documenting the club and its supporters.
Exhibiting extensively across the North West, Kelly showed work across the region including major institutions such as the Lowry and the National Football Museum. His exhibitions were known for selling out in advance, reflecting strong demand among collectors and critics alike. Following his death in 2024, he is remembered as a vital regional voice in British painting—an artist who elevated ordinary moments into luminous, layered narratives and built a lasting legacy within Cheshire’s artistic community.
