Alistair Gibson
Alastair Gibson is a South African-born sculptor renowned for his pioneering use of carbon fibre and Formula One engineering components in contemporary art. After spending over two decades in motorsport—fourteen of them in Formula One as lead mechanic for Benetton F1 and later chief mechanic for BAR and Honda—Gibson left the industry in 2008 to pursue sculpture full-time working from his studio in Northamptonshire.
Drawing on his deep technical expertise, Gibson transforms advanced composite materials and genuine F1 parts into dynamic sculptures inspired primarily by marine life, aerodynamics, and natural form. His sleek sharks, rays, skulls, and aviation-themed works reflect a unique fusion of precision engineering and organic beauty, earning him an international following among collectors, motorsport enthusiasts, and contemporary art audiences.
Gibson’s work has been exhibited in galleries across the UK, Europe, the United States, South Africa, and the Middle East, and he has completed notable commissions for figures within Formula One and major media organisations. Today, he continues to push the boundaries of carbon fibre artistry, creating sculptures that celebrate innovation, movement, and the intricate relationship between technology and nature.
