Lucy Manfredi Exhibition
Last updated onAn artist with a gift for storytelling, a love of Northern life and an unmistakable sense of humour. This November, Hepplestone Fine Art welcomes Lucy Manfredi for two special exhibitions in Cheshire and Lancashire.
There are some paintings that command attention, others that invite contemplation, and then there are those that simply make you smile. The wonderfully characterful paintings of Lucy Manfredi somehow manage all three.
With her distinctive cast of eccentric personalities, nostalgic settings and gentle observations of everyday life, Manfredi has carved out a unique place in contemporary Northern art. Her paintings are playful yet poignant, often humorous but always affectionate, capturing the extraordinary personalities and quietly amusing moments that can be found in the most ordinary of circumstances.
This November, Hepplestone Fine Art is delighted to welcome Lucy for two special personal appearances, offering collectors the opportunity to meet the artist and discover the imagination behind her much-loved paintings. Lucy will be at the gallery in Wilmslow, Cheshire, on Saturday 14th November from 12–2pm, before visiting Heskin, Lancashire, on Sunday 29th November from 12–2pm.
An Artist with a Story to Tell
At the heart of every Lucy Manfredi painting is a story. Sometimes it is immediately apparent, at other times the viewer is left to imagine the conversation, the relationship or the amusing sequence of events that might have brought her characters together.
Her subjects are wonderfully familiar. Children absorbed in their own adventures, elderly couples enjoying a moment together, eccentric individuals going about their daily routines and scenes that recall the streets, seaside towns and communities of Northern England.
There is an endearing theatricality to her work. Figures are exaggerated just enough to become memorable, their expressions and gestures revealing entire personalities. The humour is subtle, occasionally mischievous, but never unkind. Instead, Manfredi seems to celebrate the wonderful peculiarities of human nature.
Nostalgia is another powerful ingredient. Her paintings have an ability to transport the viewer back to childhood holidays, family outings and the simpler pleasures of everyday life. Yet rather than merely recreating the past, she reimagines it through a contemporary artistic language that feels fresh, original and unmistakably her own.
It is this ability to create an emotional connection that makes her paintings so compelling. Each work becomes more than an image; it becomes a conversation, a memory or perhaps a reminder of someone we once knew.
A Modern Voice in the Northern Artistic Tradition
Northern England has a remarkable artistic heritage, and comparisons with L. S. Lowry are perhaps inevitable when considering artists who find inspiration in the region’s people and everyday life.
Like Lowry, Manfredi recognises the extraordinary potential of ordinary subjects. Both artists demonstrate an affection for the individual characters who populate their worlds, finding humanity, humour and meaning in seemingly unremarkable moments. Manfredi is however very much an artist of her own generation.
Her expressive use of oil paint, playful approach to proportion and richly imagined characters give her paintings a distinctive personality. Her compositions often possess an almost cinematic quality, as though the viewer has stumbled upon a fleeting scene from a much larger story.
Working in oils, she combines confident brushwork with a carefully balanced palette, creating paintings that are full of atmosphere, texture and movement. There is an apparent spontaneity to her work, but beneath the lively surfaces lies a sophisticated understanding of composition and visual storytelling.
The result is a body of work that feels both reassuringly familiar and refreshingly original.
From Cheshire Roots to Growing Recognition
Born near Stockport in 1974, Lucy Manfredi’s creative journey began with a fascination for drawing and visual storytelling.
She studied Fine Art Illustration with Animation at Manchester Metropolitan University before pursuing postgraduate study at the University of Brighton. Her subsequent experience across illustration, animation, graphic design and textiles helped establish the strong sense of character and narrative that remains central to her paintings today.
Eventually, painting became her principal artistic focus, allowing her to develop the expressive and highly individual style for which she is now recognised.
Her connection to the North West remains an important part of her identity, with the region’s characters, communities and traditions continuing to provide a rich source of inspiration.
In 2018, Manfredi was elected to the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, joining an established institution with a distinguished history of supporting artistic excellence in the region.
Recognition has also come from within the Northern art world itself. Respected art dealer Bill Clark, whose career has been closely associated with the work of L. S. Lowry, has publicly highlighted Manfredi as an emerging artistic talent.
For an artist whose work is so deeply rooted in Northern life, such recognition represents an encouraging chapter in an evolving career.
An Artist Capturing the Imagination of Collectors
As Lucy Manfredi’s reputation has developed, so too has the enthusiasm surrounding her original paintings.
For collectors, her work offers an appealing combination of individuality, artistic accomplishment and emotional connection. There is an unmistakable consistency to her artistic vision, yet each new painting introduces fresh characters, unexpected situations and new stories to discover.
Originality is particularly important in the contemporary art market, and Manfredi has established a visual identity that is immediately recognisable. Her paintings do not rely on passing fashions or trends; instead, they explore universal experiences of humour, nostalgia, companionship and everyday life.
Her growing recognition, membership of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and developing collector following have contributed to increasing interest in her work.
For those who enjoy collecting original paintings, there is also something particularly rewarding about following an artist’s career as it unfolds. Each acquisition becomes part of a broader artistic journey, offering the opportunity to appreciate how an artist’s ideas, techniques and subjects evolve over time.
Of course, the most compelling reason to acquire a Lucy Manfredi painting remains the simplest: the pleasure of living with it.
These are paintings that invite repeated viewing, reveal new details and have an extraordinary ability to lift the spirits. In a world that can sometimes take itself rather seriously, there is something wonderfully refreshing about an artist who reminds us of the importance of humour and humanity.
A Special Opportunity to Meet the Artist
For collectors, meeting the person behind a painting can add an entirely new dimension to the experience of owning art. The opportunity to hear an artist discuss their inspiration, discover the stories behind particular works and gain an insight into their creative process creates a personal connection that can endure long after an exhibition has ended.
This November, Hepplestone Fine Art will host two special appearances by Lucy Manfredi, bringing her distinctive world of characters and storytelling to both its Cheshire and Lancashire galleries.
Wilmslow, Cheshire — Saturday 14th November 2026, 12–2pm. Exhibition continues until 21st November
