Rest in Peace Reg Gardner

We are greatly saddened to announce the passing of the highly regarded artist, Reg Gardner.
Reg Gardner was one of the North West’s most distinctive and celebrated painters, an artist whose work captured the spirit, atmosphere and changing landscape of Manchester with remarkable warmth and sensitivity. Born in Prestwich in 1948 and raised in Ardwick, his artistic talent emerged early. At just twelve years of age, he won his first art competition in the Manchester Evening News, and two years later he earned a scholarship to the Manchester High School of Art. Those early achievements marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to painting and to the city that would remain his greatest inspiration.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Gardner developed a style that was instantly recognisable. Working largely with a palette knife, he created richly textured paintings filled with light, movement and nostalgia. Influenced by the work of Adolphe Valette and the Northern tradition of urban landscape painting, he transformed familiar streets, canals, mills and docklands into evocative scenes that celebrated both the industrial heritage and the enduring character of Manchester and Lancashire. Painting largely from memory, he believed that imagination could reveal truths that observation alone could not. His exhibitions, beginning with his debut at the Colin Jellicoe Gallery in 1969, regularly attracted enthusiastic audiences, and many of his one-man shows sold out completely.
Reg Gardner leaves behind an extraordinary artistic legacy. Having sold paintings and built collections internationally, he earned a reputation as one of the region’s most popular contemporary Northern artists. One of his greatest achievements has been preserving, through paint, the atmosphere of places that have long since changed or disappeared. His work will continue to resonate with collectors, admirers and all those who recognise in his paintings not simply a city, but a memory of home.
Rest in peace Reg, reunited with your beloved Beryl.
