Introducing Emma Gibbons

Last updated on

Emma Gibbons is a British mixed-media artist whose exuberant, jewel-like works have earned her the moniker “the glittering queen of Pop Art”.   Born and raised in the South West of England, Emma comes from what she describes as a family of Cornish pirates and smugglers — an evocative heritage that she says gave her an early appetite for treasures and misdemeanours.

Emma studied Art & Illustration at the London College of Printing (BA) and then obtained an MA from Camberwell College of Art before launching her independent artistic practice.  She worked in the art world for seven years, including with Damien Hirst on high-profile installations and as a painter for the Chapman Brothers on their installation “Fucking Hell”.

Gibbons’ work is deeply rooted in popular culture, colour, transformation and celebration. Underlying much of her joyful imagery is a critique or reflection on consumerism, excess, glamour and the fleeting nature of trends and material culture — though filtered through a sparkling, playful lens.he transition from a party-life aesthetic toward sobriety and personal growth is a motivating force.

Her technique combines hand-crafted miniature components, mixed media, resin, glitter, found objects and bold typography.  She builds up her artworks from miniature, hand-made components including pills, capsules, lollies, glittering elements and resin cast objects — assembled into wall-mounted art pieces.  Her works often use bold neon or rainbow colour palettes, high gloss surfaces and a three-dimensional texture and depth that gives the pieces a jewel-like, tactile quality.

The combination of pop-culture icons, slogans and luxury branding cues (e.g., pill capsules styled after luxury bottles) is typical of her style — juxtaposing fun and visual sparkle with a layer of commentary.  While playful and visually bright, the precision and craftsmanship are notable: miniature components are organised and assembled meticulously to create cohesive pieces that invite close-up scrutiny and then immediate visual impact from afar.

Emma has achieved considerable exposure and has attracted high-profile collectors internationally including celebrities such as Margot Robbie (who purchased her piece Bad Barbie in 2022), Zoe Ball and Dawn French.  Other clients mentioned include Gordon Ramsay and Danny Dyer.

Exhibition history: She has exhibited widely at international art fairs including the Affordable Art Fair London, New York & Amsterdam; Scope LA, Art Central Hong Kong, and has shown at venues such as the Institute of Contemporary Art London.

Emma Gibbons’ art captures the intersection of glamour, pop-culture, craft and commentary. Her pieces sparkle and delight, yet they invite questions about consumerism, identity, excess and transformation. Her ability to combine high craft, spectacle and contemporary relevance means her work appeals to both seasoned collectors and those drawn to bold, expressive visual statements. Her background in the contemporary art world (e.g., working with Damien Hirst) and her own evolution from illustrative training to mini-sculptural mixed-media gives her a layered practice that sits comfortably in galleries and fairs alike.
